Ethel Smyth: Mass in D

Beethoven: Symphony No. 8

Ethel Smyth’s mass was written in 1891 and premiered in 1893 at the Royal Albert Hall.  An imposing work, it was begun in 1889, following Smyth’s return to the UK after a decade in Germany, and is very much written in a European tradition, harking back to Brahms and to Beethoven.

We have paired this with Beethoven’s 8th Symphony.

Please note: Traffic management around Romsey on 1st July for an event at Broadlands will be similar to that put in place for Romsey Show.

Temporary traffic lights at Palmerston roundabout by Broadlands Gate will control access to Broadlands and a pedestrian crossing by Burma Road (east of roundabout), these lights will be manually controlled to assist traffic flow on A27 Romsey Bypass, however delays are to be expected.

The section of Palmerston Street between roundabout and Broadwater Road will be closed.

Access to Broadwater Road from The Hundred will be maintained throughout.

There will be a second set of temporary traffic lights operational at the end of Lee Lane where it meets Southampton Road (Long Wall), again manually controlled to ease traffic flow.

Allow extra time for travel. Delays are possible from around 5pm to close of the concert at Broadlands which could extend to 11pm

Our advice is to access Romsey carparks via Greatbridge /  Winchester Road  / Alma Road .

Past experience would suggest worst congestion will be on the A3090 (Pauncefoot Hill), A27 Sherfield English and A27 through North Baddesley roads
